With newer inventions and technologies that debut almost every year, it sounds like liposuction is obsolete, right?
Not so fast!
The newer technologies such as Coolsculpting, Vanquish, Trusculpt, etc, definitely have their own advantages, namely being nonsurgical without any cut, downtime, or the need to wear a compression garment for several weeks (which is the routine for liposuction).
With an advanced technology such as Coolsculpting, most of the results of a traditional liposuction can be achieved in a young individual who is an appropriate candidate, i.e., close to the normal weight, and with not much of skin laxity, wrinkles, or stretch marks. One out to be careful about over promising the results. For someone who has small to medium fat pads in unwanted areas despite diet and exercise, these approaches are ideal (specially Coolsculpting).
Others may not benefit from a nonsurgical approach otherwise.
For someone who is in the process of weight loss, or actively planning for more significant weight loss; or with loose, overhanging skin as well as stretch marks, liposuction is still the first option, with or without a tummy tuck.
Of special note is the case of Ultrasound Assisted Liposuction (Vaser), and particularly Laser Assisted Liposuction ( Lipotherme, Slim Lipo, Smart Lipo, etc). With these added devices to the previously simple process of liposuction, significant amounts of skin tightening can be achieved. This means reduction or elimination of stretch marks, skin laxity and wrinkles in the area of liposuction, and in some cases, eliminating the need for a tummy tuck with serial laser liposuction sessions.
In any situation, this will be a decision that needs to be discussed between you and your doctor during your free consultation.
