Lip lines have the stigma of being called “smokers lines”, although many individuals have no smoking history and still develop them. For that reason, they have also been called bar code lines.
The reason is usually repetitive lip motion, paired with fat loss from around the mouth, as well as skin thinning that comes with age and sun damage.
A recent study in the journal “Dermatologic Surgery”, demonstrated that injecting certain types of dermal fillers into the lip lines, effectively flattens and conceals them for a period of at least 6 months.
Botox and Dysport injections into this area also softens these lines. This treatment also turns the lips out somewhat, making them more aesthetically pleasing.
The combination of Dysport/Botox with dermal fillers seem to give good short term aesthetic results.
For longer lasting results, there are two options: highly focused ultrasound (Ultherapy), and ablative laser resurfacing ( Erbium YAG or CO2 lasers). Both give good results.
In our experience, ablative lasers produce the best and longest lasting results.
